Wie is Roel?

Dr. Roel Verheul (1969) is gepromoveerd psycholoog, auteur, wetenschapper en zorgbestuurder.

Zijn levensmissie is om mensen en organisaties bewust te maken van hun veranderpotentieel.

Zo helpt hij hen om zich optimaal aan te passen aan nieuwe uitdagingen en omstandigheden en een betere versie van zichzelf te worden door zichzelf ten volle te ontplooien.

Biografie

Roel Verheul (1969) is geboren en getogen in de Randstad en leeft momenteel in de Belgische Kempen met zijn vrouw en drie dochters.

In 1993 studeerde hij af als psycholoog aan de Universiteit Leiden en in 1997 promoveerde hij aan de geneeskundefaculteit van de Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA) op een proefschrift over persoonlijkheidsstoornissen bij mensen met verslavingsproblematiek.

In de periode van 2001 tot 2019 werkte hij bij de GGZ De Viersprong, eerst als manager Research & Development en later als voorzitter raad van bestuur. Hij stond aan de wieg van het Viersprong Institute for Studies on Personality Disorders (VISPD) en de Viersprong Academy. Vanuit deze academische werkplaats startte hij verschillende lijnen voor onderzoek, innovatie en kennisoverdracht.

Van 2003 tot 2013 bekleedde hij een bijzondere leerstoel aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Zijn inaugurele rede – getiteld ‘Niets veranderlijker dan de mens’ – sprak hij uit in 2004 en ging over de veranderlijkheid en veranderbaarheid van persoonlijkheid. Deze rede kan als een voorloper worden gezien van zijn boek Homo plasticus.

In 2008 richtte hij samen met Jan Walburg het landelijke Kenniscentrum Persoonlijkheidsstoornissen op. Tevens was hij betrokken bij de oprichting van Stichting Topklinische GGZ in 2009.

Onder zijn voorzitterschap verschenen de Multidisciplinaire Richtlijn Persoonlijkheidsstoornissen (2008) respectievelijk de Zorgstandaard Persoonlijkheidsstoornissen (2017).

Vanaf 2007 tot 2022 combineerde hij zijn wetenschappelijke activiteiten met een bestuurlijke loopbaan in de zorg. Hij werd benoemd tot voorzitter raad van bestuur van verschillende middelgrote tot grote organisatie in de geestelijke gezondheidszorg en ouderenzorg.

Van 2010 tot 2019 was hij lid van het bestuur van De Nederlandse ggz.

Zijn onderzoek richt zich met name op de veranderlijkheid en veranderbaarheid van persoonlijkheid, persoonlijkheidsstoornissen en verslaving. Hij heeft verschillende boeken en meer dan 150 wetenschappelijke publicaties op zijn naam staan.

Persoonlijke ervaring

"Ik heb te vaak en van dichtbij moeten aanzien hoe mensen zichzelf tekort doen door hun verander­potentieel onbenut te laten. In sommige gevallen leidde dit tot ver­twijfeling, somberheid en een­zaamheid en in andere gevallen zelfs tot ver­slaving en psychosen.

Groei en verandering kunnen pijnlijk zijn, maar niets is zo pijnlijk als ont­sporing door niet tijdig te veranderen. De prijs van stil­stand is wat dat betreft veel hoger dan de prijs van verandering. En dat terwijl iedereen kan veranderen; er is echt niets moeilijks aan. Zelf heb ik altijd ervaren dat je alles kunt bereiken wat je wil, als je er maar voor gaat en doorzet."

Roel Verheul wil mensen helpen om zich optimaal aan te passen aan nieuwe uitdagingen en omstandigheden en een betere versie van zichzelf te worden door zichzelf ten volle te ontplooien.

Hij wil dit bereiken door het bestrijden van de mythe van de onveranderlijke mens en het verspreiden van kennis over het ongeëvenaarde menselijke aanpassingsvermogen en verandervermogen.

Door meer bewustzijn van zijn veranderpotentieel kan de mens zichzelf en de wereld redden.
